Building Blocks to Character

Updated: Jan 14, 2024

are you building a character mansion or a character apartment?

Character is within us all and we each have different parameters around it. When looking at character think about it like building a house. We can build a house of character bigger than our wildest dreams and to me that’s even more important than the house itself becoming a reality. Being internally sound is the most important thing to have in your life. Building this out will take a lot of work just as accomplishing your dream home. Long hours, dedication and sacrifice. Instead of growing your money in this scenario you will have self-growth, spending time learning and growing and watching that compound instead of your money.

This is yours to build and treasure and while building it yourself and reaching milestones and accomplishments you can look back on the growth and determination to see how much you have upgraded. From an apartment to a condo? From a condo to a house? From a house to a mansion? This will look different for everyone at different times throughout their journey. The important part is to enjoy the journey and the time you are in. We are all working on getting better and we all start somewhere internally.

"The man on the top of the mountain did not fall there".

-Fortune Cookie

I like to compare this to the story of the three little pigs and it’s relation to this concept. They each build a house to protect them from the big bad wolf using different materials and effort a long their journey. Just as we do throughout our lives, we choose different paths and we focus our attention on different things but there is one thing we should all remember, building a foundation of character will keep you prepared and surfaced in times when the big bad wolf comes. The thing that sticks out to me the most is that at the end of the story they all end up in the same place, if they would have just been willing to put in the extra work beforehand they would be prepared for when it comes instead of letting it float off into the wind. We do always have people in our lives to fall back on when the trouble comes but it’s important to build our character of bricks so we can be there for them when it is their turn to fall back on you. As I get older, it is amazing to me that the curiosity and lessons you can learn from even a kids story is intrinsically incredible.

Lessons are all around us, we grow as we go through life and when we upgrade to our different “houses”, there is always something to fix and learn on this journey through life but that’s what keeps life interesting. When moving to that next step, you will have things that you can continue to use on your journey that will help you through to the next step. Your beginners toolbox will still be able to be used even in the internal mansion. While you still need to grow because their are tools like a lawn mower while in an apartment or condo you won’t need but you will when you get into a house. Character is the same way, we build upon it and grow it throughout our journey and wherever we are in life. Thinking deeply, you might realize you have taken some time but not enough time to get to a couple steps but there is always more to go. We make life easier for ourselves, life will never do it for us and we need to remember that as we go through the daily motions. What type of house will you build? What will be in it?
